Israel's military condemned settlers from his country who attacked Palestinians and burned houses in the West Bank over the weekend.
An official of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued this condemnation after settlers set fire to Palestinian homes as an act of revenge for the deaths of Israeli brothers.
“Last night, there was revenge activity by people living in the area. We consider this an act of terror, violent rioting. It was a horrible night,” the official said, as quoted by Reuters .
The official reported that unrest in the West Bank continued into Monday (27/2). The IDF also deployed three additional battalions to separate Israelis and Palestinians.
“This morning, we deployed another battalion to the area to assist the two Border Patrols, which are essentially trying to defuse tensions and separate the two sides,” the official said.
The tension began on Sunday (26/2), several hours after two Israeli brothers were shot dead in the city of Huwara.
The brothers were shot days after the Israeli military raided the area to hunt down the militants. During the operation, at least 11 Palestinians were killed.
In revenge for the brothers' deaths, Israeli settlers raided Palestinian homes in the West Bank.
According to a report by The Times of Israel , the settlers burned Palestinian houses and cars.
As a result of this burning, at least 95 people were treated for inhaling harmful gases.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that one person was also killed by Israeli settler fire during the rioting in Zatara, south of Huwara.
In all, the Palestinian Red Cross treated 390 people who were injured in the unrest in the West Bank. They reported that three ambulances used to transport the victims were also attacked.
The IDF has detained eight people in connection with the Huwara attack. Some of them have been released.
However, the rioting continued into Monday. On that day, another Israeli was shot dead.
Not only that, a group of settlers also reportedly attempted to attack the Israeli military in the West Bank with the vehicle they were traveling in.
“An Israeli citizen attempted to run over an IDF officer at the scene. Troops responded by shooting the wheels of their vehicle, and the vehicle fled,” the IDF said in a statement quoted by The Times of Israel .
